The Humble Dolls’ House Has Just Had a Makeover

Orders of this luxurious Georgian dolls' house from Knightsbridge children's emporium Dragons of Walton Street are literally going through the roof with parents tasking the store's interior designers with providing that unique finish.

Complete with electricity, bespoke furnishings and sumptuous fabrics, it's no wonder this fairytale mansion is fast becoming a best-seller.

Dragons MD Lucinda Croft said the orders were coming in thick and fast.

"A dolls' house sums up the magic and innocence of childhood," said the mum of two. "It encourages children to use their imagination and allows parents to get carried away in the nostalgia."

But the stakes are being raised with increasing numbers of customers asking for each house to be tailor-made.

Lucinda adds: "We have designed bedrooms and nurseries for a whole host of celebrities and international royalty, including Princes William and Harry. It is the attention to detail that clients love, for example, one child loved animals, so we made a conservatory of animals for her including real hay for the ‘pretend' rabbit. Another little girl loved cheese, so we sourced beautiful miniature cheese for her kitchen. I could go on but I am busy planning a stable and a mini shop too!

"Our order book is growing by the week and we are delighted with its success."

Dragons of Walton Street produces the finest hand-painted furniture in the world, with stores in London and Moscow and a further outlet planned to open in Dubai at the end of the year.

Dragons Chats with Disney about Winnie the Pooh

Last week we were so very excited about meeting Andy Grey, who is the head Winnie the Pooh artist for Disney. He has been working on Winnie the Pooh for 13 years!!!

Andy came to meet one of our senior artist's, Terry Skinner to discuss how to draw him so he is true to Shepherd's original designs. Did you know Shepherd was asked to colour Disney's Winnie the Pooh by his publishers when he was 90 years old, which is why the palette is so simple.

At Dragons of Walton Street we are hoping to have Winnie the Pooh back in our portfolio by the summer, so will keep you posted!!! We used to have the license about 10 years ago before Disney bought the rights to Winnie the Pooh. We are hoping to welcome him back into the Dragons of Walton Street family along with our other resident hereos Paddington Bear, Peter Rabbit and friends and of course the Flower Fairies.

Dragons of Walton Street Launch New Designs in the Showroom

Dragons of Walton Street has today launched three new designs in our flagship store, located in Walton Street, Knightsbridge, London.

After a very successful sale, we have in our shop window a beautiful new Labrador puppy design which looks as if the puppies are sleeping on one of our William Bed headboards, it is adorable!

We have a new scattered rose-buds designs on a beautiful hand-painted Bureau Bookcase, with a hand-painted tromp l'oeil blotter for our little girls – fast becoming older girls!

For our newborns we have a Dragons safari design to be seen on one of our Cot Beds, which has playful elephants and tigers to welcome a little one into the world!

All of these are so new, we will be publishing photographs soon, in the meantime why now stop by our London showroom in Walton Street, Knightsbridge and give us your feedback on them.

I am delighted with all of them and continue to think our artist's are SO clever and I do hope you will agree too!

Five minutes with … Lucinda Croft – Nonstopmama Feature Article

Recently, Nonstopmama persuaded Lucinda to share the secrets of her makeover magic. Some of the interview is shown below, head over and read the full interview over at Nonstopmama – dedicated to giving time-crunched mamas an instant, glossy mag-style lift, daily.

What, do you think, makes handpainted furniture so appealing, especially in children's rooms?

Our appeal is that the pieces are unique and last forever. We have clients who are passing their furniture on to their children (this is thirty years later) and, if needed, we can re-paint the pieces so they can fit in to a whole new nursery. It's the ultimate in recycling!

Your company remains very much a family business ...

My mother, Rosie Fisher, started Dragons originally to sell antiques. She put a few pieces in the window that were hand-painted, like our rush-seated chair, and they were so popular she kept adding to the range until the antiques were pushed to the back of the shop and the handpainted children's pieces were at the front! Meanwhile, I am one of four children and my mother had no luck in finding furniture for our rooms. She was a great believer in children's rooms being magical and memorable so began to create useful but beautiful furniture that she would design on the back of envelopes. The business has gone from strength to strength and we now work on whole houses as well as playrooms and nurseries. When my mother died three years ago, my father asked me to step in originally as Artistic Director and now as MD.

Do you have any tips on choosing a look for a nursery or child's bedroom?

My suggestion would be to start with a fabric as it immediately gives you the colour palette for the room. If you aren't doing curtains, then start with an accessory you like. This could be as random as a gingerbread man, which we did a whole nursery around as the client loved the gingerbread man story! With nurseries, you have a few months to plan ahead so don't leave decoration to the last minute. For a start you don't want to get it wrong, but you also want to make the most of the bonding experience with your partner - decorating a nursery together can be incredible fun. Remember that you can have as much character and colour as you want in the lampshades, rugs and pictures because you can remove them when the child suddenly grows out of Beatrix Potter or whatever it might be. Then you don't have to redecorate the whole room all over again.

What details make a difference?

Colour and a sense or order, so when you are in your baby's room you aren't looking round the room thinking of jobs to do but enjoying being in that space with your precious liitle one. Obviously it needs to be practical too - make sure the essentials are in easy reach and that there's plenty to keep the baby occupied while you're changing them.

What are your design inspirations?

My inspiration often comes from need! For example, I wanted a shelf that looked pretty but could be practical too. So we designed the Dolls' House Cupboard, where the shelves are adjustable (children's books are often large when they are little and get smaller as they grow up) and the doors can close to conceal any chaos! It's one of our bestsellers already.

Do you have any advice for handpainting furniture at home?

Transfer your design using a pencil, use health and safety standard water-based paints and then get your paint brushes out! It is worth having good brushes as it makes all the difference in the world. When you have finished painting, be sure to affix it with acrylic fixative which will allow you to clean the furniture when needed.

Do you mix your own paints or can you recommend a particular range?

We do mix our own paints so we can achieve that soft, soft, palette we are famous for. They are not off-the-shelf colours yet......in a dream world, we would have our own paint range!

Any tips for making DIY works of art as durable as possible?

We use approved water-based emulsion paints that we fix with acrylic varnish and we recommend using non-abrasive cleaning agents. Our furniture is enjoyed by generation after generation, with many becoming family heirlooms. Yet we want children to enjoy them first and foremost so they're pretty durable!

What have been among your most memorable projects?

Our Design Director, Adam Dale, is a true genius and he is always coming up with new looks and ideas. He is very innovative and fun to work with and our Blissful Blue range came from that. It has already been a huge success. We deal with a huge range of clients, from international royalty and Hollywood celebrities to customers who just want the best for their children, so each project is rewarding for a different reason. Our incredible artists have painted 20 ft high murals and we have designed nurseries for Jacobean manor houses and trendy penthouses. It is the most enjoyable job imaginable because each nursery or bedroom is unique to the individual.

Woodland Twilight Mural in Palace

This week has seen the installation of one of our biggest murals ever in a Palace in the Arab part of the world.

The Woodland Twilight Mural (pictured below) is 20ft by 10ft and I think it is one of our most beautiful ever! I hope you will agree? The furniture that went with this was so beautiful and complimented the colours perfectly. The colours in the room give you that peaceful feeling that every Mother hopes to create in their child's nursery.

Having just spent Christmas at home it is a good time to re-avaluate our children's rooms. As they grow their needs are obviously changing, and so now with my son who is 10 his children's furniture is different. If you're searching for the perfect gift for your flower girl, a sparkling range of children's jewellery has recently launched in Knightsbridge. Dragons of Walton Street has unveiled its latest collection, designed by Arabelle Morgan, a former employee of Italian jewellery giants Bulgari. Her intricate pieces have each been handcrafted in Paris and are certified by the prestigious mark Joaillerie de France.

Her collection is available in 18ct yellow gold and silver and the bracelets and necklaces are all adjustable in length. Lucinda Croft, owner of Dragons of Walton Street, said: "It is a long time since I have seen something as delicate and beautiful as this come on to the market.

"They have only been in-store a matter of days and already our customers in Saudi Arabia, Moscow and London are snapping up the bracelets for their children.

"Arabelle has a huge wealth of experience and we are delighted to showcase these amazing pieces in our showrooms.

Hand made in hard wood in Sussex. All joints glued and screwed, very robust even for adult domestic use! Each chair date stamped. We are so confident of this fabulous product that we offer a lifetime guarantee on the robust construction of the chair. Drop in rush seat which can be easily replaced when covered in bubble gum stickers or worse. Can be painted in any design you can imagine.

When we started out in 1979, we established our reputation based on producing the highest quality children’s nurseries, lovingly created and expertly completed. The furniture we made for those children of the 80’s is now being passed to their children, holding irreplaceable memories and becoming timeless heirlooms.

At Dragons we always strive to meet our own high standards in what we offer to our customers. Over the last 30 years we have travelled far and wide as well as just around the corner, looking for design inspiration to develop our timeless range. Our custom made furniture is our opportunity to leave our mark on tomorrow and to reflect our customer’s taste and style through our designs.

We have never adhered to the "buy cheap, replace often" approach of mass-produced furnishings and flat packs. Instead, we offer commitment to quality in furniture-making that in the past has allowed our ancestors to collect beautiful pieces which last indefinitely; classic furniture never dates.
